The American Steel and Wire Company plant in Waukegan was part of U.S. Steel. In 1899, the established wire mill plant, Washburn and Moen, was acquired by the American Steel and Wire Company.
Located on 40 acres along the shore of Lake Michigan, south of 10th Street in South Waukegan.
The facility remained a key part of U.S. Steel’s operations for decades, including the opening of a major stainless steel wire mill in 1949.
The plant eventually closed in 1979 due to economic reasons, having served as one of Lake County’s largest employers for much of the 20th century.
